Wataru Endo Undergoes Surgery – A Race Against Time for the World Cup

Endo Wataru, who has been out of work for a long time, decided to undergo surgery. Participation in the World Cup is a race against time.

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo has undergone surgery following the foot injury he sustained against Sunderland. While details of the procedure remain unclear, the focus now appears to have shifted toward his recovery in time for this summer’s World Cup. For Liverpool supporters, however, there is a deeper hope — that this is not the beginning of a quiet farewell.

Injury Against Sunderland

Endo suffered the injury during Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Sunderland on February 11. The 33-year-old was stretchered off the pitch after hurting his foot, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the problem.

No official timeframe has been provided by the club regarding his return. Head coach Arne Slot had previously expressed hope that the Japan international might be available again before the end of the season. However, recent developments suggest a longer road ahead.

Surgery Confirmed by Japan Manager

Japan national team manager Hajime Moriyasu confirmed that Endo has undergone surgery, speaking via Nikkan Sports.

“I’ve heard that he had surgery. I’ve heard that it went well, but I don’t know the details of how it went,” Moriyasu said.

While the operation was reportedly successful, neither the nature of the procedure nor the expected recovery timeline has been disclosed.

Focus Shifts to the World Cup

Moriyasu also revealed that Endo’s rehabilitation is being planned with the World Cup in mind.

“The plan is for him to be ready in time for the World Cup, so the rehabilitation process from surgery onwards is being considered. In order to play in the World Cup, he, the club, and we all share the same understanding.”

The tournament begins on June 11, with Japan facing the Netherlands three days later. This statement strongly suggests that returning for Liverpool before the season ends may prove difficult.

More Than Just a Squad Player

Endo’s absence is significant for Liverpool. Slot has been left with limited senior midfield options, and beyond tactics, Endo offers leadership, discipline, and quiet authority on the pitch.

But beyond squad depth and selection headaches, there is something more personal for supporters.

The thought of Endo’s Liverpool chapter ending like this — quietly, through injury — is difficult to accept.

He was never a headline-grabbing signing. Instead, he earned respect the hard way: through tackles, positioning, composure, and relentless work ethic. He steadied the team in difficult moments and carried responsibility without complaint.

This cannot be the final image of him in red.

Recovery will be a race against time. But if anyone understands resilience, it is Wataru Endo.

There is no need to rush.
Anfield will be waiting.

And so will we.
