There are plenty of fine centre-backs in France, and Dayot Upamecano is certainly one of them. Alongside interest from big clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool has reportedly also kept a keen eye on him. him available on a free transfer — his future has become a hot topic.
Liverpool’s link to Upamecano isn’t exactly new. There was a time when rumours of Liverpool going after him were everywhere — especially during the 2020-21 season when he was at RB Leipzig. Back then many believed he was exactly the kind of centre-back the Reds needed; instead, they ended up signing Ibrahima Konaté, who is also French.
Still, there’s something a bit nostalgic about the name Upamecano in relation to Liverpool. He’s not retired or past his best — at 26, many would argue he’s entering what for a centre-back could be his peak years.
That said, there are real constraints. As of now, Liverpool haven’t renewed Konaté’s contract. And while they may want to bolster their centre-back options, waiting until next summer might not be feasible. January could be a pivotal window.
From Upamecano’s side, the question is whether Bayern Munich will decide to cash in now — while there’s still something to gain — or wait until his deal expires and lose him for nothing.
