Steven Gerrard Reportedly Declines Rangers Manager Role

Steven Gerrard

As a bit of a digression at the outset — I still find myself occasionally watching videos of Steven Gerrard from his playing days. And every time, I’m struck by how great he was. After all, Gerrard is undoubtedly one of Liverpool’s most legendary figures.

Known affectionately as “Stevie,” he went on to pursue a coaching path after his playing career. But since taking the reins at Aston Villa, he’s encountered some difficult periods. Does that mean he’s been a total failure as a manager? Not quite.

During his stint with Rangers, he not only delivered strong results but also helped secure a league title. Rangers is a storied club in Scotland, one that shares historical stature with their rivals Celtic. However, this season has gotten off to a rough start for Rangers. Earlier this month, they parted ways with manager Russell Martin, citing poor league performance as well as criticism following a heavy defeat in the Champions League.

In the search for a new manager, reports have named Gerrard as a candidate for a return. But according to outlets like Sky Sports, “Stevie” has declined the offer. The reason given is that the timing simply wasn’t right. Still, it's said that the discussions between Gerrard and Rangers were positive, and that both sides affirmed a friendly relationship going forward.

Many fans have long speculated that Gerrard would eventually return to Anfield as a manager. At one point, he was even rumored as a possible successor to Jürgen Klopp. But doubts have been raised over his managerial track record — particularly due to his struggles at Aston Villa and his subsequent move to Saudi Arabia.

If he’s ever going to land the Liverpool job, he’ll likely need to prove himself elsewhere once again. As a legend adored by many, I’ll certainly be watching closely to see what path Gerrard takes next.
